THE SWORD AND THE MIRROR
2018
Drawing on the concept of trompe-l’œil, this piece proposes an investigation into the boundaries between reality and illusion, extending this reflection to issues related to gender performativity. The work establishes a symbolic dialogue with Aristophanes’ comedy The Thesmophoriazusae, by challenging social representations and expectations through irony and ambiguity.
A reflective material, suspended in the exhibition space, receives the projection of the artist’s image in a continuous gesture of smoothing a sword. The image gradually and subtly reveals itself, demanding temporal and sensory engagement from the viewer.
